Целта на изследването е да илюстрира и докаже редица особености на развоя на Джойсовата повествователна техника в отдалечаването му от традиционните методи на класическия роман на деветнайсети век (с неговата типична линеарност и авторитарен всезнаещ повествовател) към модерния роман, в който ролята на повествователя отслабва за сметка на така наречената естетика на косвеността.
